Most people I see haven’t slept properly in months. We start with your nights, not your childhood.

Why the first session is mostly listening

You do not need a rehearsed story. What the first hour is actually for, and why we go slower than you expect.

On beginning

What sliding scale really means here

How our fee range works, who it is for, and why asking for it is a normal part of starting therapy.

On money

Telehealth is real therapy

What changes on a screen, what does not, and how to make a small private space for the hour.

On distance

How it begins

Four quiet steps.

01

You write

Or you don’t know what to write — our form helps you say it.

02

A human reply

Within one working day. Never a bot, never a template.

03

A free 15-minute call

To find the right fit — fit matters more than anything.

04

Your first session

Mostly listening. You set the pace.

Most people are nervous before the first one. Here is exactly what happens.

Keep scrolling — the hour opens

The first session

Fifty minutes, no performance required.

Minutes 0–10

Arriving

Water, a comfortable chair, no forms mid-feeling. You can start anywhere, or nowhere.

Minutes 10–40

The work

Mostly you talking, us listening well. Questions that open doors, never corner you.

Minutes 40–50

Landing

We end gently, agree on nothing more than whether to meet again. You leave with your feet under you.

Fees & insurance

What it costs, before you have to ask.

Touch your plan. No portals, no surprise bills, no “contact us for pricing.”

In network. A typical copay is $20–40 per session once your deductible is met. We check your exact benefits before you commit to anything.

In network. Most Cigna plans cover 50-minute sessions with a copay of $25–45. We confirm yours in writing before the first session.

In network with most Optum-administered plans. Expect a $20–50 copay; we verify before you start.

Out of network for most Blue plans — many reimburse 50–80% after your out-of-network deductible. We give you a superbill each month.

Fees run $175–220 per session, with sliding-scale places from $90 held on every clinician's calendar. Ask — it is a normal question here.

Sliding scale, held open

Every clinician keeps sliding-scale places on their calendar — from $90. Asking for one is a normal part of starting, not a favour.

Superbills, explained

Out of network? We send you a monthly superbill — an itemised receipt your insurer can reimburse against — and we will walk you through submitting the first one.

Where you’re seen

The room, or your room.

The consulting room — an armchair under a lamp

In person

A quiet room, water, no waiting-room fluorescent hum. Evening and weekend hours held for people with day jobs.

Telehealth — a laptop session from a sofa at home

Telehealth

Real therapy, on a secure video line. The same clinician, from wherever you can close a door.

01

Safety first

Nothing happens before you feel steady. Consent is not a form here — it is the pace of the whole thing.

02

Fit over everything

The evidence is blunt: the relationship does the healing. If we are not the right fit, we will say so, and help you find it.

03

Your pace

You will never be pushed to tell a story before it wants telling. Slow is not failure. Slow is the method.

04

A partnership

You are not a diagnosis being managed. You are a person we think with — about what hurts, and what you want instead.

In our own words

The practice · No. 01

We are suspicious of websites like this one. A therapy practice can dress itself in soft colours and say “safe space” until the words wear out, and none of it tells you the only things you actually need to know: who will sit with you, what they will do, and whether you can afford to keep coming.

So this page tries to behave the way we do. It answers the money question without being asked. It shows you the people, with their real credentials, before you commit to anything. It does not claim outcomes we cannot promise, because healing does not run on a success rate.

Therapy is not advice. It is a room where your own thinking gets room to move.

What we can promise: a reply from a human within one working day. A free call to check fit, and honesty if the fit is wrong. Clinicians who train continuously and take supervision seriously. And an hour, weekly, that belongs entirely to you — which is rarer than it sounds.

— The five of us at Ballast

How we work with you

The approaches, in plain language.

CBT & CBT-I

sleep · habits · panic

Cognitive behavioural therapy maps the loop between what you think, what you do, and how you sleep — then interrupts it at the weakest link. CBT-I, its insomnia form, is the first-line treatment for chronic sleeplessness. Expect worksheets. Expect them to be short.

The spaces

Rooms that keep confidences.

Room one — The lamp, the chair, the door that closes.Room two — Morning light, for people who start early. The annex — For couples and family sessions.

Room one

The lamp, the chair, the door that closes.

13

50minutes

Fifty minutes, once a week, that belong entirely to you.

That is the only number we will put on this page. Everything else — how fast, how deep, how long — is yours to set.

Asked, answered

The questions people actually have.

Do you prescribe medication?

No — we are therapists, not prescribers. If medication might help, we will say so plainly and coordinate with your GP or a psychiatrist we trust, with your consent.

Reaching out

The first message is the hardest. So we write it with you.

“I’m reaching out because .It’s been .I’d prefer .”

— you, whenever you’re ready

Finish it together →

Nothing here is recorded — this is just to show you how our contact form works. No blank box, no “tell us everything.”

Because…

It’s been…

I’d prefer…

When you’re ready

The chair is already here.

No urgency, no countdown. Whenever you get to it, a human will read what you send and reply within one working day.

Lying awake doing tomorrow already. Dreading the bed. The maths of 'if I fall asleep now I get five hours.'

We usually start with CBT-I — a structured, surprisingly gentle protocol with the strongest evidence base in sleep. Two weeks of sleep records, then small precise changes. No sleep hygiene lectures.

A date the year bends around. Startling easily. Telling it like a news report, or not telling it at all.
